CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

In the small foyer, Bridgette stomped snow off her feet and shook snowflakes from her hair. She was dying for her old bathrobe, a cup of hot chocolate, and a kiss from Foote. In that order. It had been an exhausting day.

In the living room, Foote chomped on popcorn as he watched TV. The commentator, who looked suspiciously like Howdy Doody, was discussing yesterday’s Senate hearings. Every few minutes, he would quiz a legal expert, one in D.C., one in San Francisco and one in New York. Then, he would make a major pronouncement of one sort or another, some thoughtful, most just inane. It had been a good day for the media. The Judge had handed them material to work with for months.

“Did you watch the hearings?” Bridgette asked, sitting down heavily, propping her feet up on the coffee table. “Judge Alexander scored a lot of points. People are going wild. They love him.”

Foote glanced sideways at her. “That’s not the only story there, Bridgette. The press is missing something big.”

Blood rushed to her head. “Tell me.”

“Attorney-client privilege. That was one hell of a leak. And it was suspiciously convenient for Alexander. If I were a reporter, I’d ask some questions.”

“Such as…” She grabbed his arm.

“Such as who had access to that information? The police? Yes, but they had no reason to leak it and Alexander would never place his wife’s case in jeopardy. That’s why he was so mad. His anger was real. And that’s why the public is responding so favorably. Alexander is a conduit for their outrage at a government out of control.”

“Wow. That’s good,” Bridgette said. “I’m going to write that down and use it in my story tomorrow.” She rummaged through a nearby desk for a pen and began taking notes. She turned eagerly to Foote. “Okay, so who leaked the information to the Committee? Rideout?”

“The bastard should be disbarred. I think you ought to talk to Senator Stone’s staff. Find out how he got hold of that information.”

Foote was right. She would jump on it first thing in the morning. She gave him a big wet smack. “I love you,” she said. She pressed for more. “What do you think about Alexander? Does he have a chance?”

“Not in a million years.”

“With this surge of support?”

“He’s a political hot potato. The White House won’t touch him again. Too risky.”

Bridgette thought Foote was probably right. “You must be happy. Your men caught Claire Alexander.”

Foote smiled. “That’s something we have to talk about. If you want confidential information, you’re gonna have to be quiet about being at that house in Middleburg.”

“You know I won’t say anything.”

“You’re a reporter, aren’t you?”

“Not at our expense!”

Foote narrowed his eyes.

“I know you had to keep our relationship under wraps until you found the killer.”

“That’s right,” Foote said, suddenly placing his arm around her neck. “And don’t you forget it.” He snapped her head back until the tendons in her neck stretched back over her shoulder blades. The pain was excruciating.
